Matterport vs Zillow 3D Home: Which Virtual Tour Is Worth It?
Matterport and Zillow 3D Home are the most-discussed virtual tour tools in residential real estate. One is a professional platform built for immersive experiences; the other is a free listing tool built by the largest real estate marketplace in the US.
The short version
- Matterport: Higher quality, more immersive, requires dedicated camera or compatible device. Better for premium listings.
- Zillow 3D Home: Free, uses any 360° camera or iPhone. Integrates directly into Zillow listings. Sufficient for standard residential listings.

Matterport
Matterport creates a fully navigable 3D "digital twin" — buyers can virtually walk through the property from any angle. The experience is the most immersive available in residential real estate. Matterport also generates a 2D floor plan from the 3D model.
Matterport requires either a dedicated Matterport Pro2/Pro3 camera (~$2,700–$5,900) or a compatible 360° camera. Monthly hosting fees apply. It is the standard choice for luxury listings and tech-forward agents.
Zillow 3D Home
Zillow 3D Home creates a room-by-room 360° tour rather than a true 3D model. Agents capture 360° photos with a compatible camera or an iPhone (using Zillow's free app), and Zillow stitches them into a walkable tour displayed directly in the Zillow listing.
Zillow 3D Home is free and requires no subscription. The experience is less immersive than Matterport but more than sufficient for the average buyer viewing a listing on Zillow. It also integrates directly into Zillow search, where it's surfaced as a filter option.
Floor plans
Matterport generates an automatically derived 2D floor plan from its 3D scan. The floor plan is reasonably accurate but not ANSI-certified.
Zillow 3D Home does not generate floor plans. You would need a separate tool for floor plan capture if needed for an appraisal or MLS requirement.
Already have the floor plan?
Neither Matterport nor Zillow 3D Home provides ANSI-compliant GLA. If you need square footage from a Matterport floor plan PDF, PlanSnapper lets you upload it and measure directly.
